ABOUT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened in April 2019, replacing White Hart Lane as the home of Tottenham Hotspur. Designed by Populous, the stadium was conceived as much more than a traditional football ground. With a current capacity of 62,850, it is the largest club stadium in London and one of the biggest football stadiums in England. One of its most distinctive features is the dividing retractable grass pitch. The football surface can be moved away to reveal a separate synthetic field underneath, allowing the venue to stage NFL games without damaging the Premier League pitch. Populous describes it as the first stadium purpose-built to serve as an NFL home outside the United States. The stadium is also designed for concerts, boxing, rugby and other major events, reflecting Tottenham’s ambition to make the venue active far beyond matchdays. Despite its size, the stadium was designed to keep supporters close to the action. The front rows are only around 4.9 to 7.9 metres from the touchline, while the huge 17,500-seat single-tier South Stand was created to generate a strong wall of sound behind the goal. The club’s famous golden cockerel sits above it. The result is a stadium that represents a very different philosophy from traditional English grounds. Rather than recreating White Hart Lane, Tottenham built a venue focused on scale, technology, flexibility and the future of modern football.
