The curious fan
For anyone who wants to know why Tottenham are called Hotspur, where Arsenal’s Gunners nickname comes from, or what lies behind the symbols we see every weekend.
ABOUT THE FOOTBALL RABBIT HOLE
Behind every club, badge, stadium and rivalry lies another story worth discovering.
The Football Rabbit Hole is an independent football storytelling project, created by a football fan who has loved the beautiful game for as long as he can remember - all the way back to the 1990s.
Of course, there’s a club close to my heart. But my greatest loyalty has always been to football itself.
I watch it from the stands and on television. I read about it, analyse it, travel for it and rarely miss an opportunity to visit a stadium - whether it’s a world-famous arena or a lesser-known ground with a story of its own.
What fascinates me goes far beyond what happens on the pitch. It’s the history, the people, the rivalries, the traditions and the stories behind familiar names. It’s also football as a social phenomenon, a cultural force and an economic powerhouse: how clubs became institutions, how communities built identities around them and how the game evolved into the global spectacle we know today.
That’s where The Football Rabbit Hole begins. One question leads to another. One story opens the door to five more. Before you know it, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole. And that’s exactly the point.
The Football Rabbit Hole is for people who love football but want to know more than the latest scores, transfers and league tables. For those who want history without hours buried in encyclopedias - told in a way that’s engaging, accessible and fun to read.
For anyone who wants to know why Tottenham are called Hotspur, where Arsenal’s Gunners nickname comes from, or what lies behind the symbols we see every weekend.
For the fan who loves bringing a surprising detail to the conversation and explaining the game beyond the scoreline.
For those who want to discover a stadium, peek behind the dressing-room door, follow a rivalry through history or explore the lives of football’s characters.
For readers curious about football as culture, community, business and social phenomenon and how the modern game became what it is.
You don’t have to know everything about football.
You just have to be curious.
Some stories begin in books, archives and old newspaper reports. Others begin in the stands, walking through a stadium or exploring a city shaped by its football club.
The Football Rabbit Hole brings those worlds together: football history, culture, personalities, economics and first-hand groundhopping experiences. The photographs in the Stadium and Groundhopping galleries are taken by the author - a personal perspective on the places where the game lives.
Explore groundhoppingThe aim is simple: make football’s rich history and bigger stories enjoyable to explore. Not an encyclopedia, not a stream of breaking news - just carefully researched, approachable storytelling with room for surprising details and fresh connections.
Where articles draw on external material, sources are acknowledged. Original photography is identified and the work of other creators is treated with respect.
